Sum 41 at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg – Live Review

On January 20, Sum 41 took the stage at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg for their last hurrah ever in the city with the Tour of the Setting Sum.

The night opened with Vancouver band Gob, a Canadian skate-punk band that had the crowd moving from the get-go. With tracks like “I Hear You Calling” and “Give Up the Grudge,” the high-energy set set the tone for the evening.

Next, Toronto’s PUP brought a grunge-influenced edge to the show, their punchy riffs and gritty vocals keeping the crowd amped for the headliner.

When Sum 41 hit the stage, the arena erupted. Opening with “Motivation,” the band had the crowd on their feet, singing along to a mix of classic hits and fresh tracks from their latest album Heaven :x: Hell.

In a surprise move, the band dropped covers of Slayer’s “Raining Blood” and Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” The covers, though brief, gave the audience a jolt of excitement and added an unexpected twist to the show.

A personal highlight of the night came when frontman Deryck Whibley shared the story of his mid-70s Gibson Marauder guitar, which had been stolen from his home in 2003. After nearly 20 years, the guitar was returned to him just in time for this final tour. The crowd cheered in response, moved by the emotional connection between Whibley and the instrument.

As the night continued, the crowd sang along to “In Too Deep” and “Still Waiting,” with hands in the air and voices loud enough to rival the band’s amps. The emotional encore, “So Long, Goodbye,” left fans reflecting on their shared history with the band.

Sum 41 will continue to tour Canada until the end of January until their last ever performance at the JUNO Awards on March 30th in Vancouver, BC. More info on the tour here.
