Mannequin Pussy at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver

Mannequin Pussy turned the Commodore Ballroom into a pressure cooker on July 24. The Philadelphia punks were in town as part of their I Got Heaven Tour, and from the moment they opened with “Sometimes,” it was all gas, no brakes.
They played nearly the whole new album: “Softly,” “Control,” “Loud Bark,” and the absolutely feral title track, “I Got Heaven.” Each song delivered with the kind of full-body commitment that makes their shows feel more like communal exorcisms than concerts. Frontwoman Marisa “Missy” Dabice was a fireball, stomping, screaming, whispering, and snarling through the set.
Bassist Colins “Bear” Regisford and drummer Kaleen Reading were a freight train all night, especially on short bursts like “Clams” and “Pigs Is Pigs.” Guitarist Maxine Steen and touring member Carolyn Haynes added texture and chaos in equal measure. By the time they closed with “Romantic,” the room was drenched in sweat.
Earlier, opener Gouge Away set the tone with a blistering set of their own and got the crowd moshing early on.
