NSL Vancouver Rise FC vs AFC Toronto

Vancouver Rise FC pulled off a statement win on Thursday night, beating top-of-the-table AFC Toronto 2-1 in front of a lively Swangard Stadium crowd.
The home side came out strong, nearly striking early when Samantha Chang was played into the box by a slick pass from Lisa Pechersky in the 7th minute. Chang’s shot sailed just over the bar, and Toronto made them pay three minutes later. Victoria Pickett found Kaylee Hunter in the box, and the forward slotted it home to give the visitors a quick lead.
But Rise FC didn’t flinch.
Chang responded with a thunderous equalizer in the 20th minute, picking up a loose ball in midfield and firing a curling strike from just outside the box past keeper Sofia Manner. Fifteen minutes later, she was at it again ; this time running onto a sharp through ball from Josie Longhurst and blasting another long-range effort beyond Manner to put Rise FC ahead.
Jessica De Filippo nearly added a third just before halftime, turning quickly after chesting down a cross from Pechersky but hitting the side netting.
Rise FC came out flying in the second half, pushing down the wings through Holly Ward and Pechersky. Pechersky came close in the 54th minute with a shot that was handled by Manner, while at the other end, keeper Morgan McAslan made key saves, including one that she pushed onto the post, to preserve the lead.
Jessika Cowart and Jaylyn Wright made big defensive plays in the final stretch to keep Toronto out, sealing an impressive win for Vancouver.
Next up, Rise FC hosts Ottawa Rapid FC on Saturday, August 2 for their first-ever Pride Match. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.

PWHL Vancouver Goldeneyes Blank Toronto Sceptres 5–0 in Statement Win at Pacific Coliseum
The Vancouver Goldeneyes made a loud statement last night. Three former Toronto Sceptres helped power a 5–0 shutout in Toronto’s first visit to the Pacific Coliseum, giving Vancouver its biggest win of the PWHL season in front of more than 14,000 fans.
Sarah Nurse led the charge with two goals against her former team. Izzy Daniel and Tereza Vanišová added second-period markers, striking just 11 seconds apart to set a new PWHL record for fastest two goals by one team. Abby Boreen sealed it in the third.
Kristen Campbell was perfect. The Goldeneyes netminder stopped all 24 shots she faced for her first shutout since the inaugural season, drawing a roar from the packed crowd of 14,006.
After a quiet first period, Vancouver took control fast. Daniel opened the scoring at 5:58 of the second. Vanišová and Nurse followed at 13:31 and 13:42, breaking the game wide open. Nurse struck again early in the third for her first multi-goal game of the season.
The five goals marked a new franchise high for the Goldeneyes and the largest margin of victory in the PWHL this year. It snapped a three-game skid for Vancouver and capped a rough West Coast trip for Toronto, which allowed 11 goals across two games.
Vancouver heads back on the road next for Takeover Tour action in Denver against Seattle, then travels to Minnesota ahead of the Olympic break. Toronto looks to reset Wednesday in Montréal.
Three Stars
- Sarah Nurse (VAN) – 2G
- Kristen Campbell (VAN) – 24 saves, shutout
- Tereza Vanišová (VAN) – 1G, 1A

NBA G League – Long Island Nets vs Wisconsin Herd
Long Island Nets closed out their two-game set in Laval with a 121–112 win over the Wisconsin Herd on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 6,201 fans at Place Bell. After a slow start that had them trailing after the first quarter, the Nets found their rhythm in the second, cutting down on mistakes and taking control before halftime. That stretch helped them carry a narrow lead into the break and set up a more confident second half.
Malachi Smith led the way with a standout performance, scoring a career-high 36 points while also adding nine assists. He was efficient throughout the game and consistently created good looks, both for himself and his teammates. Nate Williams and Tre Scott provided solid support on both ends, and Long Island benefited from balanced scoring overall, with several players contributing at key moments.
The game remained competitive into the fourth quarter, but Long Island pulled away with a late run to seal the win. The Nets shot well as a team and did most of their damage inside, which made the difference down the stretch. It was a steady, well-rounded performance and a positive way for Long Island to wrap up its trip to Laval before returning home.
