Alison Moyet at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver

Published

Alison Moyet played the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver on May 12, and if there were any doubts about whether she could still bring it, they were shut down within the first few notes of opener “Fire.” The legendary British vocalist was in peak form, her unmistakable contralto voice filling the room with power and clarity that hasn’t dulled in the slightest since her Yazoo days.

The show was part of her Key Tour, named after her latest album of reimagined tracks, and two new songs. She eased in with “More” and “Such Small Ale.” Moyet was confident, relaxed, and often cheeky, cracking jokes between songs.

The set design was simple: no drummer, just two musicians flanking her on elevated platforms, with moody lighting that stayed mostly out of the way. The focus stayed on the voice. And wow, what a voice. “Changeling” and “Only You” were highlights, both stripped back just enough to bring out their emotional core.

She wrapped things up with a one-two punch of “Love Resurrection” and Yazoo classics “Situation” and “Don’t Go.”

Avenoir Brings ‘Mirage Tour’ to the Hollywood Theatre in Vancouver

Avenoir in Vancouver

Rising Canadian R&B artist Avenoir brought his Mirage Tour – Act One to Vancouver on March 12, playing an intimate show at the Hollywood Theatre. The evening opened with a set from Alberta-born singer-songwriter Jonah David, who warmed up the crowd with his 2-piece band before the headliner took the stage.

Born in South Africa and raised in Edmonton, Avenoir has built serious momentum over the past year. His debut EP NOIRE earned a 2025 Juno nomination, and his music has racked up hundreds of millions of streams. The Vancouver stop was part of a short run of theatre shows meant to give fans a closer look at the fast-rising artist before a bigger year ahead.

The performance leaned into atmosphere. Avenoir kept movement minimal, often standing alone at center stage as his songs unfolded over sleek production, including great saxophone moments. His acoustics songs helped strengthen his connection with the audience. The production blended futuristic R&B with booming 808s and dramatic arrangements that gave several tracks a cinematic punch. His voice has a smoky tone that cuts through the heavy beats.

The show felt like a young artist still settling into the stage. The music is already there, and the confidence will likely follow.
