Dermot Kennedy at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver

Dermot Kennedy brought his A Promised Return tour to Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre on October 7, kicking off the North American run with an intimate, sold-out show. It was a clear shift from his arena days. This was Kennedy stripped back to his core, revisiting his catalog with warmth, restraint, and honesty.

The stage felt like a living room with an antique rug, vintage lamps, and a giant storybook backdrop that opened to a page titled A Promised Return. It was simple but striking, fitting for an artist intent on reconnecting with his roots. Backed by a small band on violin, upright bass, and piano, Kennedy traded glossy pop production for organic soundscapes that let his voice carry the night.

Songs once filled with synths and heavy percussion took on new life. “Outnumbered” became a confessional ballad, while “Something to Someone” felt like a quiet prayer. Kennedy’s voice filled every corner of the theatre.

After years of stadium tours, this was a homecoming of sorts. For fans, it was a reminder of the raw storyteller who first sang on Dublin streets, now returning to that spirit with open arms.
