“RKS or Nothing”: Rainbow Kitten Surprise Turns Up the Heat in Winnipeg

Fans felt the heat last night at the Burton Cummings Theatre as Rainbow Kitten Surprise lit up the stage on May 14th in Winnipeg, MB.
Early in the set, the crowd erupted into song with “Cocaine Jesus,” a fan favourite that’s seen viral popularity on TikTok. The lead singer, Ela Melo, set the tone for the night with their high-energy spins and dramatic poses. Their performance was so captivating, it almost felt wrong not to dance along. When the band launched into another classic, “When It Lands,” everybody in the entire venue was on their feet, from the front row to the very back, shouting every lyric at the top of their lungs. The audience was diverse, from young adults to parents and even kids, all united by the music.
Rainbow Kitten Surprise draws you in with their emotionally rich lyrics and relatable songs. The setlist jumped effortlessly from upbeat pop to folky rock, complete with guitar solos and even a surprise banjo moment that changed the vibe entirely. Their genre-defying style keeps listeners hooked, never knowing what’s next. The “Rainbow” in their name said a lot in their flashy, cyberpunk lighting that lit up the room in waves of colour. And though the temperature rose uncomfortably high, both the fans and the band powered through the heat.
At first, the band felt a bit spread out on stage, but as the show progressed, the guitarist and bassist began to move around more, playfully engaging with each other and the crowd. One detail that stood out: the drummer. Beaming from behind the kit, his constant smile said everything you needed to know about the band’s vibe. They were having just as much fun as the audience.
The fans’ dedication was clear. As the lead singer proudly declared, “It’s RKS or nothing.”
